Congratulations to Abdullah Mohammad, 5th Year, who won the Marie Keating Foundation Special Award and achieved 3rd prize in the Technology Senior Individual section of this year’s BT Young Scientist Awards with his project called ’Cancer Virotherapy Simulator’.

Congratulations also to Transition Year students Cormac Hickey, Niamh O’Mullane and Eoin O’Connor who achieved a Highly Commended award for their project entitled ‘What puts the power in “power balance” wrist bands?’. Well done to all students involved and a special thank you to teachers Ms. Jennifer Godsell and Mr. Ronan Neville for their guidance and support.

Cork Colleges Victory for CCS

Congratulations to players, Mr. Pat Looney and all involved with the Senior Hurling squad at CCS for their recent outstanding victory over Christian Brothers College in the Cork Colleges Senior B Hurling Final. The final score was 2-15 to 0-8.

Christmas Carols 2011

Well done to all the students and teachers from CCS who helped raise over €7000 for Saint Vincent De Paul in Carrigaline and Ballygarvan before Christmas. As well as Carol Singing by all year groups, Transition Year students fasted overnight in the Parish Hall. A special thank you as always to Mr. Kevin McCluskey who organised the event.

Health Week in CCS

As part of Carrigaline Community School’s Health Week this year many classes participated in activities to raise awareness about our Health, with a particular emphasis on ‘Mental Health’ this year.

Below is a sample of some of the activities that students participated in.

Mental Health Awareness Talk “Laughter is the best medicine with no side effects.”

Second Year classes Antain, Áine, Ailín, and Artair attended a mental health seminar with a community health nurse on Monday 14^th of November. The seminar addressed issues such as mental ill health, communication, and stress management.

Health Challenges

During the week Ms. O’Keeffe and Ms. Godsell organised a series of health challenges for Junior cycle classes. With the help of fourth years, classes Blaithnaid and Blaithin from 1^st Year, Aifric and Ardal from 2^nd Year, and Fachtna and Ferghal from 3^rd year were chosen to take part in challenges such as a Health Quiz and a Blind-folded tasting Test.

Mmmm Food Samples

Free samples of Cottage pie, Smoothies and homemade soup were available in the Cafeteria. The yummy free samples were made fresh by 2^nd Year Home Economics classes in the kitchen.

Humourfit Drama “Time is precious, make some for yourself.”

A CCS health week regular, Michael O’ Sullivan from Humourfit Drama Productions performed his hilarious, and hard-hitting sketches on bullying and on general mental health in teenagers.

School Positivity

Our very own CCS student council took the tremendous subject of Mental Health into their own hands, and to spread the word on mental health and positivity they had special Health week t-shirts made and customised with positive mental health slogans and quotes. Every member of the student council, members of staff and some kind helpers wore the t-shirts every day during Health week to spread the positive messages.

Artist in Residence – Launch of Mosaic Garden

Congratulations to the Transition Year Art students of 2010 / 2011, whose beautiful mosaics were installed in one of the school’s gardens recently. The students were guided by Ms. Anna Walsh and Artist in Residence Ms. Eva White (Past Pupil). This special garden was launched at the recent Awards Night in CCS.

Awards Night 2011

Congratulations to all students who received awards at the recent Awards Night at CCS. Well done also to the many students who were nominated. Guest speaker on the night was past pupil Stephen O’Leary, Media Analyst. The Hall of Fame award was presented to Cllr. Tim Lombard, Mayor Cork County and also a past pupil of CCS, who launched the recently published book ’30 Bliain Faoi Bhláth’ – 30 years of Carrigaline Community School.

In his speech, Principal, Mr. John Hourihan said that the planning stage of the new extension to the school had been completed and that work would start early next year. He stated that “this State investment in the future of education in our community is a clear indication that the Department of Education views Carrigaline Community School as a vibrant and excellent centre of learning into the future”.

A special performance by the newly formed Glee Club, with guest singer Laura O’Sullivan and managed by Ms. Niamh McCarthy and Ms. Ann O’Regan was one of the highlights of the night.

The awards were coordinated by Dr. Caitríona McGrath.

Well done to all on a very successful Log On, Learn!

This years Log On, Learn has sadly come to an end. Both the Students and the Buddies received certificates at the end of the course. The Students and the Buddies both leave the course with a variety of new skills which they will hopefully use in the future and of course new found friends.

The students of CCS had a wonderful evening in the Carrigaline Court Hotel recently where they held their Transition Year Fashion Show.

Well done to all the students and staff involved this year. Money raised on the night went to “Breast Cancer Awareness”.
