CCS Student selected for Irish u-18 Ice Hockey Team

Congratulations to 6th Year Student Darren Sisk on his recent selection for the Irish U-18 Ice Hockey team.

Darren first began playing inline (hockey on wheels) with the cork inline team. The team competes in tournaments all around the country and it is here where he first began to develop his skills.
In 2011 he got the opportunity to try out for the mens U-18 National Ice Hockey squad and successfully made it to a tournament in Mexico city.
Darren trains at the home of the Belfast Giants, the Odessey arena, Belfast.

In February 2013 Darren was selected for Ireland to go to Turkey to play against such countries as South Africa, Israel and Turkey, where he performed admirably, a great achievement.

We wish Darren the best of luck with his future selections.

County Success for 2nd Year Boys Basketball Team

Congratulations to the 2nd Year Boys Basketball team. Months of dedicated training and practice really paid dividends for this hard working team. The boys saw off all challenges this season to emerge victorious from the pool stages

of the county league, beating Kinsale, Spiorad Naomh, Rochestown and Skibbereen.

CCS met a fiercely competitive Coláiste an Phiarsaigh side in the final in Neptune.

It was a closely contested game, full of controversy and drama with players on both sides in foul and injury trouble. It went end to end for the second half with Carrigaline narrowly pulling ahead in the end to seal the win. Outstanding performances across the board saw scores from the entire bench in what rounded off a solid season for the boys.

Well done to all involved. The title of 2nd Year Boys Cork County Champions is well deserved.

The next stage of the competition sees the team travel to Clonmel to play in the qualifying tournament for the All Ireland Finals. All at CCS would like to wish the team and coaches the very best of luck.

Junior Certificate Blessing Ceremony

There will be a “Junior Certificate Blessing Ceremony” in the Church of Our Lady and St. John, Carrigaline on Tuesday 30 April at 7.30 pm.

The service has been organised by the youth and family group of the parish assembly, with the support of the school.

It is hoped that as many of the students, their families and their teachers might attend as possible on that night.

CCS Ski Trip 2013

Ski Trip

In mid-term in February 2013 we went to Bregenz in Austria on our ski trip. It was six days long and was packed full of activities and fun. On the first day everyone was awful at skiing but within a few hours they got the hang of it slowly but surely. The instructors spent most the day screaming ‘’ pizza,pizza,pizza’’ when people took off not knowing how to stop. On the first night we went bowling which was good craic. The other nights we went swimming, to a waterpark, and had 2 movie nights which we were delighted with because we were so tired from the day skiing. At lunch time each day we would meet up in a small restaurant at the top of the baby slope and get our pizza and chips.

The best part about skiing in my opinion was the rooms and the banter that would be had and wherever we went our speakers came with us; they even got named Derrick the Panda. But whenever Derrick the Panda was taking a break we had good ol’ Mr Nyhan to give us a choon or two. (or three) The only problem we had was we were all short on toilet paper so two tigers decided to go on an adventure in a lift to get us some and came back with twenty four toilet rolls between them stuffed into their onesies. As you can imagine Ms. O’ Loughlin was NOT impressed but was very understanding about our little issue.

Overall I think the Ski Trip was definitely worth it and I would recommend it to anyone thinking of doing it.

CCS Student Awards Night 2013

A wonderful night was held recently at the Carrigaline Court Hotel to honour the achievements of our students, both past and present. Students received awards in a wide range of areas including international student exchanges, business, art, sport and music as well as student of the year for each year group. Students involved in the Gaisce programme received silver medals on the night.

Our talented school choir ‘CCS Voices’ also performed on the night.

BACK TO THE 80’S WITH CCS

You are about to go on a journey…BACK TO THE 80’S

Join the cast of Carrigaline Community School this March as they venture into the past. From the era that brought the world The Rubik’s Cube and The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles students and teachers have come together to produce a truly ‘ awesome’ show.

Follow the lives of these teenagers from the eighties only to discover things were not so different, well apart from the clothes and terrible hairstyles!!!

Set in the USA, Back To The 80′s tells the story of the senior class of William Ocean High School, as remembered and seen through the eyes of Corey Palmer, who is now 30-something. (played by teacher Mr. Oliver Troy)

‘The cast includes some amazing voices,’ said co- director Laura O Callaghan. ‘It should be a fun and entertaining night for everyone.’ Numbers include ‘Girls just wanna have fun’, ‘Hey Mickey’ and Michael Jackson’s ‘Man in the Mirror’. Ann O Regan, Co-director said ‘I think it will be a fun night for parents and students alike – many of the parents will have grown up in the 80’s and they will be brought right back in time.’

The show starts on Wednesday March 20^th for three nights. Tickets are on sale in the school Don’t Miss it!

CCS Student “Best Speaker” in Concern Debates

In October 2012 4 5th year students volunteered to take part in the Concern Debates for schools. The debates were divided into 2 parts, the speeches and the debates. Students Mark Calthrop, Lily Dineen, Mairead Twohig and Sean Brophy, with support and guidance from Ms. O’Doherty and Ms. Loughnane, attended 2 debates and a speech competition. Although the students did not reach the finals, Mark Calthrop was chosen by the adjudicators as the best speaker during their final debate.

Congratulations to Mark and well done to our debating team for their efforts this year!

CCS in the Pink for Breast Cancer Fundraising Day

On Wednesday 30th January 2013 a school ‘Colours Day’ was organised at CCS by a group of 4th Year students as part of their Young Social Innovators project. All students were asked to wear pink clothing and to bring in €2 to raise money for the Marie Keating foundation. Students also sold pink ribbons and pink bracelets on the day.

Well done to all involved in the organisation of this event for a very worthy cause.

Parents Association Coffee Morning
